Ojai looks to overhaul Libbey Park playground....
This is fine news! I grew up playing and cart-wheeling in this playground and many of my childhood memories revolved around this park, the tennis courts, the now torn down cottages, the bike path, plays in the bowl and the dressing rooms, dancing to summertime music and of course the lively Cinco de Mayo.
I especially remember working as a teenager at the LOCAL HERO bookstore, and witnessing the protest that surrounded the cutting down of the -giant- oak tree, which was a local hero in the kids eyes. I loved climbing, crawling, and leaning on to this oak tree's welcoming arms. Ojai's elite tree huggers tied themselves to the tree trunk, and it's arms in protest of the removal. Unfortunately it had to go, too much of a hazard and danger due to root rot and weakening branches.
Here is a link to another tree loving situation in Ojai:
I love this town!
The park is beautiful, the Ojai community did an incredible job making our park one of the best venues in Southern California. Pete and I stumbled up a storytelling performance in the park one evening last month after getting frozen yogurt. For me, it was the perfect spring evening in Ojai. We walked downtown, and in my embedded routine, we walked by Libbey Park and noticed the new (to me!) well-lit stage, and the spacious audience seating. This stage, the bowl, effortlessly grabbed our attention from the road. What a great time. It's times like this, being held by Pete, watching this performance together, looking up and at the Ojai starry sky though the giant limbs of oak, knowing that these are the new memories to be created!
I am so glad to hear that that the park will get another face-lift- I am excited to see what memories will come of that!
