Bula's Big Brother....
As the Big 'D' consistently confronts us with challenges in all ways, shapes and forms, what we are reminded that no matter how hard the uphill battle is, it is 100% worth it.
John Gould, one of my climbing partners, along with Matt Greco, and I went out on a spectacular fall day last week to shoot John's new project just to the left of his last one, Bula (5.13 hard). Its always a challenge to judge the difficulty of these routes upon first inspection, or even second, or third for that matter. The routes here are deceptively difficult, what looks like an easy section turns out to be anything but easy (freaking hard is more like it). For John's new route pictured here, that exact scenario played out. I have discovered that scenario with my bolted routes as with the handful of folks out there establishing routes, we all have the same pleasure of realizing what may be a 'warm-ups", 5.11s or 5.12s are clearly not.
Hence the name of this blog post 'Bula's Big Brother,' for this hundred foot pitch is much harder than John ever anticipated. Power endurance 101.
